Frankfurt am Main, 2 November 2026 – The international law firm ADVANT Beiten has provided comprehensive legal advice to the Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in connection with the "Albatross" large-scale battery energy storage system in Lower Saxony.
The "Albatross" battery energy storage system in Neuenkirchen has a planned capacity of 350 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 1,400 megawatt-hours (MWh), making it one of the largest battery energy storage systems in Germany. CATL is involved in the project as a technology partner and is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the battery energy storage system. In future, the system is set to make a significant contribution to stabilising the German electricity grid and to the integration of renewable energy sources.
With the successful completion of a project financing round totalling EUR 260 million, the system developed by GIGA Storage has reached an important milestone. The funds are being provided by an international banking consortium comprising ABN AMRO, Hamburg Commercial Bank, ING, Rabobank, Siemens Bank, SMBC and Société Générale.
CATL is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Ningde, China, the company operates internationally and invests heavily in the development of innovative battery technologies. In Germany, CATL operates, amongst other things, a battery plant in Arnstadt, Thuringia, making it a major player in the European battery industry.
GIGA Storage is a Dutch company specialising in the development, implementation and operation of large-scale battery energy storage systems. Through projects in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, GIGA Storage aims to increase the flexibility of European electricity grids and drive forward the integration of renewable energy. The "Albatross" project is part of the company’s growing project pipeline, which totals around 1.4 gigawatts across the three countries.
